I am writing to ask for your help in recruiting new Justices to sit in our Magistrates’ Courts in Plymouth and Newton Abbot.

Several experienced Magistrates have reached retirement age over the past year and therefore the local Magistracy is seeking applications from a wide range of ordinary people in the community with the right qualities to fill these vacancies.

Magistrates are volunteers, who hear cases in courts dealing with a wide range of crimes and judicial issues in their community. They hear cases in the criminal court or the family court or both. No special qualifications are needed and training for the role will be provided to successful applicants, who should be able to commit at least 13 days per year (many employers will give time off to serve as a magistrate).

Applicants need to have an awareness of social issues, understand people and have a sense of fairness. They need to be reliable and committed to serving the community, capable of weighing up arguments, follow evidence and be able to work with others to reach an impartial decision.

We are looking, in particular, for those candidates who would represent our wider and diverse society. Applications from younger people and those who work across all sectors are very welcome.

Please pass this message to your local residents; I should be grateful if you might place the attached details on parish community notice boards and in local parish magazines.

I would urge anyone considering an application to download further details and an application form at: or contact the local Legal Admin Team at

Applications will close 30th April 2018.

Thank you for your help,

Chris Peach
